The Secret Life of Trees: by Kat

18.03.2023

I stumbled on this great resource about developing a mini forest and thought I'd share this blog about the amazing things trees do without us even realising.

Trees communicate with each other and to insects through scents, roots and the fungi network, they do this to optimise their microclimate and ward off predators, they literally know they are stronger together. Trees can form a community that is clever enough to optimise light levels and nutrients so that the whole community can thrive. Trees can also adapt, for example taking less water when there is a drought. They can even pass knowledge to next generations to evolve to changing environmental conditions. Climate change is maybe happening too rapidly though for some species to adapt quick enough. As JB from restore the forests concludes in his blog: "If we want to act in this time of rapid climate change, we must first study Nature. Bio-imitate it. Copy/paste what really works. So let's take inspiration from Nature!" You can find his full blog here.
