How to Reap The Benefits of Lemon Verbena

26/07/2023

When we moved to our first house in Spain there were a number of plants in the garden and I had to use an App to identify many of them.  I took a picture of this bush and it came up as lemon verbena.  I did a bit a research and found out how lucky I was to have this amazing resourse in my garden.  Watch the video below to see how to make a cup of amazing tea and read below for some of the benefits.

Some Potential Health Benefits

According to MedicineNet lemon verbena can help with the following:

  • Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities that help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress.
  • Lemon verbena is high in phenolic compounds, which are potent antioxidants that can defend against free radicals.
  • May support better joint function and help with weight reduction.
  • Hastatoside and verbenalin are volatile oils known as monoterpenoids in lemon verbena, which can help with insomnia by stimulating the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) system in the brain.
  • Lemon verbena has a direct influence on hormone levels in the body, which could reduce problems such as anxiety.
  • Lemon verbena tea has long been used to aid in digestion by soothing the stomach with its antispasmodic properties and relaxing the gastrointestinal tract.

The above are all bonuses as it tastes great and I drink it as a relaxing cuppa.

Nature has all the answers

And for the planet.....

A native of South America, this is a really useful herb, the uses don't stop at tea!  Including it your garden adds a beneficial plant that you can harvest from.  The flowers that come in summer are attractive to butterflies and pollinators, and it is fairly drought tolerant so won't take all your water in summer.  It does like a good amount of sunshine, and in colder climates can be grown inside on a sunny windowsill (although this is less useful for your garden biodiversity).  I find it easy to care for in Spain, a little prune when I need a cup of tea and a watering every few weeks if no rain.
